A number of church members and homegroups are involved in reaching out to people in their local communities around the church.
Oxford Community Emergency Foodbank
Despite our Welfare system in this country many thousands of people still go hungry through debt, sickness, sudden job loss, addiction, marriage breakdown, or simply delays in receiving benefit. A number of foodbanks have been set up in cities all over the country and have been amazed at the extent of this well hidden poverty right in the midst of their communities. The Oxford CEF was set up in 2008 as a non-denominational Christian project to tackle food poverty in the city. WRBC is one of the local churches in the Oxford area who support this initiative. We have a large collection box available after our morning services where people can donate non-perishable food. This is then collected by CEF volunteers and distributed to individuals and families in need. For more details of the work of the CEF please visit http://www.cefoxford.co.uk
Community Coffee Morning
Every Tuesday morning there is a community coffee morning that runs at 198 Woodstock Road. This is open to anyone who wants to come in for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat.
Stepping Stones is our babies, toddlers and carers group. It is held on Thursdays during term time 198 Woodstock Road from 10am to 12pm. There are lots of toys for the children and a cup of tea or coffee for the carers. The morning finishes with a Bible story and some singing.
Each Friday during term time a group meets in the Manse next door to the church (198 Woodstock Road) to socialize, eat together and think about what the Bible has to say to us about life. The group is open to anyone from any background, but is likely to be particularly beneficial for people who are not yet Christians or who are new to the faith and want to find out more. We meet from 12.00 noon for a light lunch and this is followed by an opportunity to consider something from the Bible or perhaps watch a DVD. The approach is fairly informal, questions are very welcome and discussions can be wide-ranging! Do get in touch
with David [+44 (0)1865 515569] if you would like to join us.
North Oxford Action Against Homelessness
NOOAH was established in 2013 in response to concerns about the issue of homelessness in North Oxford. A small group of individuals were increasingly concerned about specific homeless people in the area and made a proposal that local churches could work together to provide support for them. WRBC is one of seven churches in North Oxford participating in the NOAAH initiative and its focus on practical and financial help for homeless people. If you would like more details or have suggestions about people NOAAH can support, please see Caroline Jones at the church.
